The week where I created a capsule wardrobe

Week 26: Monday 5th July - Sunday 11th July 2021

Last week I talked about arriving in the waning moon phase of Kassandra Reinhardt's Art of Abundance Lunar Yoga Challenge. I talked about how this is a time for letting go - both mentally removing things from our heads, and also physically removing junk from our lives.

Ruthlessly decluttering my wardrobe

So to finish this month's waning moon phase I decide to declutter my wardrobe. It's something I've been thinking about doing for a long time now - but I've been putting it off as it seems like quite a hard work task to do.

Why I'm doing it

I'm partly doing it because half of the stuff I own no longer fits me since I started losing weight.

I'm also doing it because even before I lost weight I only ever used to wear the same few outfits over and over. Around 90% of my clothes would just hang there, unused, for months and months - even years at a time.

As it turns out...

I'm not the only person with a massively wasteful and under-utilised wardrobe. According to the two articles below, most people don't wear at least 50% of their wardrobes:

People do not wear at least 50 percent of their wardrobes, says study

How many clothes we own and how many clothes we wear

Finally, I'm doing it because I feel so different now.

I feel different both physically and mentally, and I want those changes to be reflected in my wardrobe. I want to have less clothes and I want the clothes that I do have to be of higher quality, as well as more minimalist and simple in style.

Creating a minimalist capsule wardrobe

It turns out that getting rid of loads of clothes in favour of a more minimalist approach has a name - it's called creating a capsule wardrobe. I'd never heard of this term before today but apparently it's a growing trend.

According to this article, all of the successful people such as Barak Obama, Mark Zuckerberg and Drew Barrymore have capsule wardrobes. I quite like the idea of following in the footsteps of someone like Barak Obama - if Barak Obama has a capsule wardrobe then I definitely think I should get one too!

What is a capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is when you decide to own just a small set of around 30 - 40 items of clothing items. These should be high quality items that will last a long time. Your capsule wardrobe should include a number of basic items that mix and match with one another easily to create a range of outfits.

A ruthless decluttering of my clothes

To get started with the process of creating my very own capsule wardrobe I have a massive, ruthless clear out and decluttering session. It takes ages as I end up trying most things on, just to be sure that I definitely want to get rid of each item. I'm really pleased with how ruthless I manage to be. I end up with three bin bags of old clothes, which will soon be going to the charity shop.

I don't think I can truthfully say I've created a capsule wardrobe just yet though - at this stage I've just cleared out a load of old clothes I no longer wear.

Still, It's a good start.

The plan now is to continue decluttering my clothes over the coming weeks and months, getting rid of even more clothing items that I no longer really need or wear. I'll also have to start thinking about buying a few new high quality basic items to form the basis of my new capsule wardrobe.

Watch this space for more updates - hopefully in a month or two I'll be able to share some pictures of my finalised wardrobe.
